Still Steaming Ahead
September 2008
West Coast Railways have continued to do us proud and since Issue 7 in 2007 The Lune Habitat Group Express has been out on the tracks twice. On Saturday, 8th September, 2007, we travelled to York picking up at Carnforth, Wennington, Bentham and Skipton. York was a marvellous city to visit, combining history of all sorts, shopping and dining.
In September 2008 The Lune Habitat Group Express took to the tracks again when we visited Chester
Jemima Blundell-Roberts aged 10 ¾ describes the day!
“When we got to the platform at Carnforth, it was full of friendly and excited people waiting to get on the train, then at last the train arrived with steam shooting out of the engine tooting as it came…
“The Pullman carriage had thick carpet, beautiful white table cloths and our own name places, I was very surprised to see my name there!!…
“We met some lovely people on the train and we had breakfast with them. A waiter passed me a menu, I read it and asked what was a kipper, “a fish” he replied! In the end I chose melon and the English breakfast which was delicious but I think I might be brave and try the kipper next time!…
“After breakfast I went to help Mr Mick selling raffle tickets for the Lune Rivers Trust which was fun (I really liked meeting all the friendly people) we did so well that we ran out of tickets and had to buy some more in Chester!!!…
“Chester had some amazing shops, my favourite was the jewellers which had big security men wearing fancy black suits and ear pieces to report any suspicions people walking by. You weren’t allowed in unless you had an appointment, although I managed to peep through at someone buying a wedding ring. The couple had champagne glasses and roses. We looked around some more shops and I bought a gorgeous jumper with a lovely pattern in the hood…
“We caught a taxi back to the train station just in time as the train arrived in perfect time. I then helped Mr Mick again selling the rest of the raffle tickets and then helped him draw the prizes and deliver them. I can’t wait until this year’s trip!!!”
